Here’s Why PS5 Joysticks Drift (and Why They’ll Only Get Worse)

1,1 Mio. aufrufe157

Mere months have passed since the PS5’s hotly anticipated launch, and already there’s a class-action lawsuit brewing over joystick drift on Sony’s high-tech DualSense controllers. Who could have seen this coming? Well, as it turns out, everyone. Everyone should have seen this coming. Because for all its exciting new tech, the DualSense uses off-the-shelf joystick hardware with a long history of predictable, preventable issues. And now we’ve investigated those issues in excruciating detail.
Sony isn’t the only company to use off-the-shelf joystick modules, but, like Microsoft, they’ve made it difficult to repair this consumable component. Joysticks have a known life expectancy-it’s listed right in a product sheet from the manufacturer. In this video, we head back inside a DualSense controller to see what is failing, and how.

A few notes: We started this investigation due to reports of PS5 DualSense controllers drifting, but as we mention at 0:58, these findings apply to most modern joysticks! 3:14 that carbon pad has been scratched with a dental pick. The actual wear to the pads will look different, this was a demonstration since we didn't have a drifting DualSense. 3:50 sprinkling goldfish crackers into your joystick will not fix drift. Don't try this at home. Don't miss Margot the puppy desperately trying to eat Cheez-Its at 5:47

      1. Abdullah Haroon

@patratcan there is an issue, just not specific to the ps5, it happens to most controllers these days. Switch, Xbox etc

      2. patratcan

So there is no PS5 specific issue with joystick drift?

      3. patratcan

        @jub8891 This.

      4. Abdullah Haroon

@jub8891 because everyone is focused on this issue of drifting in the ps5 in particular because of a certain lawsuit that Sony is facing. More views I suppose

      5. Braden Cory

I thought only switch controllers drifed

    2. frank sam

I haven’t had any issues on my ps5 or ps4 or I just don’t notice it.. hmm

    3. Mikki Hintikka

poor people problems. Only use custom build pc

    4. Jesse Rya

Honestly, anyone who has a ps5 already deserves what ever problem the console has. Be smarter. Problem solved.

    5. • c h e r r y •

At this point I'm convinced they're all purposely doing this to sell more controllers.

    6. Cute Bridge

controllers getting more expensive but they dont last as long anymore neat

    7. Carl Ynghrafnsson

I bought a last gen XBox One controller; drift out of the box. I used Gamepad Tester for Android which shows it doesn't zero out. Messing with the potentiometer screws can lead to disaster. I bought the PS5 controller and I got lucky. The sticks zero out. This hit or miss is sad. Thank you for the video and I hope the industry sees this. It makes me wonder if there are aftermarket mfrs making controllers with better parts. Here is an opportunity.

    8. chris james

I got 190 ppl in my friend list. One of them is on a ps5. And I feel sorry for him. Poor victim of trend.

    9. kingofmonsters14

welp... time to skip this generation.

    10. Landry Saathoff

I can speak to the 400 hr lifespan of the potentiometer. The left stick on my XB1 controller would drift upwards without stopping (so dead zone adjust did nothing). I added up my controller time and my drift issue started at about 450hrs.

    11. Void Walker

I must have gotten lucky since my PS4 controller has been going strong since 2015 and it has to have seen over a few thousand hours of use since then to now.

    12. Smallest Goober

I'm sure my chinese knockoff of an xbox controller is less likely to drift.

    13. James Jackson

I've had ps5 since day 1 and still have no problems

    14. YouIndeedSuck

Wow it’s almost like they just want you to buy more controllers when your current one breaks Must just be a coincidence

    15. Sagiri Izumi

What are you wearing??? Sally Jesse Raphael glasses, a Target flannel 8 sizes too big and a giant watch cap that looks like a bag on your head?

    16. EB

i noticed my drift when i open my map on warzone

    17. Polish guy with hard to spell name ;-p

I have a very strong feeling there is product placement in this video, but I'm not sure what it is............... I know! But i don't need joysticks! ;-p ;-p

    18. illitero

I'm genuinely surprised a digital solution hasn't become a new standard at this point given how drift has been an issue for nearly three decades at this point.

    19. MariNate

      Yall don’t have a ps5 in 2021? Lmaooo cbm

    20. Guilherme Ferreira

Me still using a ps2 controller... 🤨 Well the left joystick occasionally gets stuck but doesn't interfere with gameplay

    21. Kenji Nihipali

Been happening to my ps4 controllers for a long time. Sony’s qc has gone down hill and fast.

I got so much money when my stick messes up I just go spend $49-69 and get a new one.

    23. DabTakr

Day 4: Omg i hope my springs don't stretch

    24. Uh Oh

Thats weird. I guess I got lucky. My controllers lasted over a year with 1000+hrs of gameplay with intense use. I’ve smacked this thing on my desk so hard its cracked all the plastic housings on the bottom left side. Xbox one S controller btw

    25. Kainoa Fragas

Mmm yes really useful for all those ps5 out there 👀👀👀

    26. Some Guy

Well, there goes any desire to get a ps5. I'd rather have a carbon copy of ps4 controllers with no fancy vibration features, than controllers with built-in defects.

    27. et de stellis

This is *precisely* the *exact* reason why I didn't buy one yet 💯 (P.S. I'm not broke but am accepting donations)

    28. Chris Oli

      Already ?

Just the thing I thought when I first saw dual sense I have ps4 and it's a very big issue

    30. Rooftop Rumble

It's not just the joy stick that experiences drift, it's the entire controller drifting across the room after playing fut champs

    31. Kauko

Bought 4 ps4 controllers, 3 of them drift. One started during warranty, they replaced it, started again after warranty. Other two started also after warranty. SONY is making a fool from us. Its time for a massive customer lawsuit!!! I have been using controllers since... old nintendo/sega days. Bought multiple controllers for PC, Wii, Xbox... Never ever I had problems with any of them. Except if I used them to much. And the ps4? The one I use the most is the one that works since day one. Other 3 are like new... and yet, all of them drift. Now what should I do? Bought a new one? So that they will drift again? Or open this 3 and hope for the best... Man, they cost 60€, its not like they are some cheap knockoffs from ebay...

    32. Sina Madani

My Xbox One controller drifted too, wasn't fixable. Had to disconnect the stick from the controller PCB.

    33. Geoff NF

This is why I don’t buy things for at least a few months, so they work these things out

    34. kmjansen

I never had an issue this fast, I just useally buy 1 controller every year

    35. ZmannR2

So buy a Series X? Game Pass destroys this bull crap

    36. Cyclops

No idea how my PS2 and Xbox360 controllers are both still fine then. It's almost as if they've made the plastic softer on purpose so they wear out quickly. Hmm, weird.

    37. autisticgamer96

"We're honestly surprised that companies dont make these parts easy to fix" uhhhhh did yall forget apple was the starters of not letting customers fix their own products they paid for and purposely make it difficult for their customers to fix stuff so their forced to buy the newest model of any appl device?

    38. rafghani

      Contol drift = sales scheme🤔

    39. Kamal Wilders

It’s all a marketing stunt, they make easy money of it why else y’all think it’s $60 for a controller? Imagine if 200 people’s controller drift and they manage to buy a new one in a month 200x60 = $12.000 easy cash and God knows how much the numbers actually are

      1. Sparten Ent

Its $70 for the controller btw this also tell me that you dont have a ps5 because you didn't know that.

    40. Mark bolt

Oh they know the problem, they just want us to keep buying new ones

    41. Xelion

So, as indicated, the problem's supposed to be like the DS4, right? So, I game around 1000+ hours a year (at least according to the PS's data of the end of the year) and have been gaming on PS4 with the same DS4 that came with the console since 2015, I'm at more than 5000 currently and still no problems, luckily. So if you're lucky you COULD have NO problems for a long time with the Dualsense too, I guess, right?

    42. Gaming York

Me: ha this can’t happen on a pc! Also me: replacing my broken keyboard in my laptop

    43. Sebastian Abk

My ps4 controller started drifting 1 year ago like 3 months after i got my ps4. I cleaned the controller inside like 8 times.. Nothing worked.. At last I decided just to stop playing due to work. After 1 month of not touching the controller it got fixed on its own.. Ive been playing for 3 monthsbow with no drift at all.

    44. ktm crush

180 for an Xbox controller 😂 that will break like every other regular controller

    45. Yannie D.

I want to see the vibration motors

    46. Owen Quercia

They took a page from Xbox and Nintendo

    47. Ethan Joseph

      Cute doggo

    48. Sterling Davison

5:25 I can tell you why. Controllers are expensive and they want people to buy them. Even though a decent amount of people can fix it there are still a majority that don't. It's like a car dealership. Most of their money come from maintaining vehicles not from selling them. Console makers just want to keep the money flowing even if it's a drip.

    49. BurnCKC

      He says 'soldering' funny

    50. NullPoEx

Here's a pro gamer tip: A Hakko FR-301 or similar desoldering gun will make removing these analog stick modules quick and easy, and the analog stick modules cost about $2 each. If you repair 4 controllers with this, you've already paid for the cost of the desoldering gun.

    51. Chase Goolsby

So are you telling me to get an Xbox?

    52. NullPoEx

Sega's solution to this in the Dreamcast and Sega Saturn 3D controller was to use Hall Effect sensors. These use magnets to detect the position of the joystick and will never fail because they do not make contact with anything. The spring will still wear, but the joystick itself works forever. This is why Dreamcast controllers have no drift. In fact, high-quality flightsticks used in flight simulators and actual aircraft use the same technology, because nobody wants an airplane drifting off course due to wear.

    53. Ryan Favelle

Great to see this torn down to the point of identifying the underlying cause. I have a camera pan/tilt head with the exact same fault. Will have to try pulling it down and fixing it

    54. Andrea Di Mauro

      Just... play a f**king game 🤣

    55. wizardswordplay

Good thing I still prefer ds4

    56. Mc Kuc

Desolder vacuum pump 20$ and a bunch of analog sticks 15$ and you are safe :D

    57. Zach F

Ooooor Sony could just get it right the first time..

    58. TotallyNotRedneckYall

My elite series 1 lasted through three years of brutal gameplay. Mostly BF, OW, D2, and COD. Rip 😭

    59. Taffy Adam

      PC gaming

    60. ThexWITCHxMaster

When my PS4 Pro stops working I'll upgrade, but right now I have no reason to upgrade. PS5 can't be found right now unless its on eBay. Plus the PS5 doesn't really have games for it yet just games ported from the PS4. Maybe in a another year I'll think about getting one once this virus is in the past and shortages are over you know the things cauing all the problems to buy these products 🤔. Like PS5.

    61. Enigma-Sama

I'm hoping they choose to fix this, unlike when they allowed roaches inside the ps4 with open vents.

    62. KiRuR

this wasnt helpful or insight in anyway what so ever...

    63. Ravy Tsora

Simple solution... just don't play games that requires analog inputs! On a more serious note, what surprises me is not how it is modern controller design that is subject to drift, but how apparently what is seemingly the same design does not cause drift on older controllers. Is that due to the kind of games you play are different?

    64. THE A MAN!!

This just happened to all my ps4 controllers

    65. venom Rid

guess i'll.wait for the ps5 pro

    66. Erina Porter

Had these problems with both ps3 and ps4 controllers. Ps2 controller still works perfectly though. Why are the components so hard to replace? Because Sony makes more money if you buy a replacement controller.

    67. herkiee1

They should have used ALPS SKCM WHITE

    70. Backon Lazer

I'll give you a hint why console makers don't make the parts easily replaceable:

    71. VJakariV The IRL Main Videos In A Few Years Etc

      Just like ps4 controllers eh?

    72. Woah

    73. phyrexianjudgement

      Mine doesnt drift

    74. EvlogitosGR

Since they have so many drifting issues..They have to lower the price of a controller..This is one of the reason I am moving to pc👉

    75. 4Real

I'll stick with me keyboard 😌, But I did grt drift on my switch which they fixed no problem..

    76. Nofun Allowed

Never experienced drift, but the retainer spring from the R2 trigger broke after a month! DON'T use adaptive triggers, that screws up the springs. Luckily it was covered under store warranty.

    77. mEnTL32

BRRRAAAVVOOOO! Finally someone has fully explained the problem. I've been replacing joystick modules in my controllers for years and you have captured everything that has been wrong since XBox 360 days.

    78. saba1978

2 hour a day the controller will last 7 months. So buy 1000 of them and you are good to go.

My GameCube controllers are older than me and they work flawlessly how did things change 😓

    82. Suco de Futa

meanwhile, my xbox360 controller that was bought in 2013 still works perfectly

    83. andyastrand

Surely there’s an optical solution to this, you can get optical mice for less than $10 dollars, having 2 micro cameras in the unit watching the movement of the axles would surely be quite easy and not prone to these problems

    84. ASSASSIN79100

Nintendo glad they aren't the only ones.

    85. Francis Collie

why does it only happen to certain controllers though? If the same component is in ps4, ps5 and Xbox, why haven't we seen this happen on ps4 or Xbox?

    86. Emile Boshoff

      Nacon makes the best sticks

    87. Marco A

Controller should have 1 year warranty no just 90 days...

    88. Mr NofflesWaffles

The whole point of Sony not fixing these controllers is literally to get people to buy more controllers. I'd rather have a ps4 controller without drift then to have a ps5 controller for 2 months and it having drift AND THEN buy another 60 dollar controller.

    89. novcze

total clickbait, it's nothing specific to PS5 joysticks as other controllers use the same ALPS part ... yeah, some of them will drift with wear and tear, that's normal.

    90. eden alon

Any recommendations for a good controller using quality parts? Pc compatible

    91. ThePlay Boi

Yeah I dropped my controller twice and it just kept getting worse until it got to the point where I’d spin in circles and couldn’t do anything until I got a new one

    92. Quacky

I know you used simple words, but I still only got half of it.

    93. ᚱ ᚨ ᛏ ᚲ ᛟ

I have had both 360 an Xbox One controllers and I have never had this drifting issue.

    94. Josh D

In economics and industrial design, planned obsolescence (also called built-in obsolescence or premature obsolescence) is a policy of planning or designing a product with an artificially limited useful life or a purposely frail design, so that it becomes obsolete after a certain pre-determined period of time upon which it decrementally functions or suddenly ceases to function, or might be perceived as unfashionable.[1] The rationale behind this strategy is to generate long-term sales volume by reducing the time between repeat purchases (referred to as "shortening the replacement cycle").[2] It is the deliberate shortening of a lifespan of a product to force consumers to purchase functional replacements.

    95. WICK3D

      Everyone: We want joysticks that won't start drifting after a month of use. Sony: *V I B R A T I O N* 😩💦

      1. Bruh Moment

The thing is who even cares about vibration. Most people I know turn it off on most games they play, including myself.

    96. Daniel Naumann

I've had the Xbox One Recon controller ever since its released and my experience has been incredible. Well over 2000 hours of game time and the only issue I ever had was the rubber at the endpoint of the right trigger wore off, but that was an easy glue-it-back-on fix and that was 2 years ago. If you're looking for a controller, I highly recommend it. (PC usage, mainly action RPGs like Dark Souls and Monster Hunter)

    97. Anders Hass

Why does this happen more often with newer controllers than older ones?

    98. Julius Woodard

People are just too rough on things. My very first PS4 controller just started having issues last year. I had that thing for 6 years before it started acting up. Meanwhile my son ran through at least 8 of those. So far I’m not having any issues with my PS5 controllers. 🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️

      1. Fruit Astolosan

People say the same thing with both console controllers. I've literally just started calling it luck because some controllers last year's while some last week's to months lmao

    99. Mr. Bofo

Just like with the Switch, I won't be buying a PS5 until this issue is resolved. Used the same PS3 controller for years and it still doesn't drift. There is no excuse here. Guess my next console will be a PC lol.

    100. Hallvard Mugås

People will watch this a lot and forget it
